When the Bubble Bursts – Fake Degrees and Certificates in India

When the bubble bursts in the New York Stock Exchange, it is very hard to comprehend. When they are caught, the same fate happens to fraudsters who carry fake educational credentials and other fraudulent certificates. Many others secure university admissions and jobs in many ways such as nepotism, backdoor entry, and illegally.

Later, they might be intellects or philanthropists in their poor country. Once they gained trust, they could easily fool the ignorant but they become ‘coolies’, cleaners, and nightwatchmen in the metros for a reason.

Bitter Experiences

In my childhood, I had seen so many liars who fooled the community by claiming credentials with fake documents. By falsely fabricating many transcripts of pre-degree examinations with the help of employees at the university registrar’s office and the politicians, many students got admission to professional colleges including medical and engineering. In the late 1970’s and 80’s University of Kerala employees doctored the grades for hefty bribes. Those who got 9 marks changed to 91, 0 changed to 90, and secured admissions in medical and engineering colleges. When they were discovered, the criminal case reached session courts and the High Court. And then everything vanished from the news as usual. Later, the University of Kerala destroyed those pre-degree examination records of the late 1970s and early 1980s to save many higher-ups, politicians, and administrators. Probably, they all forgot that big scam in Kerala.

About 30 years back when I applied for the university transcripts of Pre-degree, the University of Kerala did not have those records as they destroyed them. Strange, but that is true even today. That cost me many years as it delayed my university admission for grad courses in the U.S. Because of that scam, I became a double-time victim.

Today, the University of Kerala does not have all those records of Pre-degree during the 1970s and early 1980s. Many of them who secured admission at engineering and medical colleges fraudulently withdrew their admissions to escape from investigations and criminal charges. Personally, I know many of them. Others who got admitted to other states continued their studies. Now, all those fraudsters might have retired honorably from their services. Probably, many of these fraudsters are all well-respected philanthropists or are dead.

Almost every university in India has gone through this phase at one time or another. So many scams did not come to light but will be buried in the graves along with the fraudsters leaving the curse for their generations. These scammers take away so many opportunities for deserving students.

What is the present education system in India?

Education is a major part of Indian culture. The oldest universities in the world were Nalanda and Takshasila situated in India (500 BCE to 400 BCE). Today, education in India has five levels such as early childhood education, primary education, secondary education, higher education, and vocational education. Homeschooling is also legal in India. In addition to that, there are 410 international schools operating in India. As per NEP2020, the “10+2” model is replaced with the “5+3+3+4” model. All these schools in India are managed by the public and private sectors. The private sector institutions are owned mainly on the basis of caste and religion. 277 fake engineering colleges were identified in 2018. As of today, there are 1,072 universities functioning in India.

In higher education, students from socially and educationally backward belong to SC, ST, and OBC. They have 15%, 7.5%, and 27% reservations respectively. EWC is another category. That leaves only 50.5% of seats for the general category. However, just scoring 50% and a couple of hundred dollars is enough to get into professional colleges in India. The average B.tech fee in a private engineering college is anywhere from INR 3 lakhs to 19 lakhs and for the undergraduate medical degree (MBBS) is from INR 10 lakhs to 25 lakhs. However, fake degrees and fake credentials are still abundant. Why did they choose to be living lies with fake educational credentials? That criminal practice destroys the deserved opportunities for hardworking and talented candidates.

In the US, I spent about eight years and enormous resources for the doctoral degree. The university fees alone were about USD 400,000. That is after so many years of university education and I know how it feels when someone carries a fake credential. What is more, some universities bestow doctorates to those who donate to build a library or as an advertisement. The poor thing for those who claim it without knowing the basics of research is how much it is worth.

How many are involved in this scheme in India?

It is a norm in India (Rahul claimed to have an MPhil without a master’s, Ramesh, the HRD minister claimed to have two PhDs, and Modi claimed to have two, one from DU and another from GU). That list goes on and on. From parliament to poor remote villages, it is a norm.

When I asked how many fake credentials are in India, the Chatgpt answered:

“It is difficult to provide an exact percentage of fake credentials in India as there is no reliable data available on the extent of the problem. However, there have been several studies and reports that suggest that the issue of fake degrees and work experience is a significant problem in India.”

“For example, a 2018 report by the Indian Staffing Federation (ISF) estimated that around 10-15% of job applicants in India provide fake degrees or certificates. Another study conducted by Aspiring Minds in 2016 found that 1 in 3 job applicants in India provided false information on their resumes, including fake degrees and work experience.”

Presently, how many fake universities are in India?

On October 02, 2023, the University Grants Commission exposed 20 fake universities in India. Eight fake universities are operating in the capital alone. As stated in Section 22(1) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, a fake university has not been established by a Central, State, or Provincial Act, is not regarded as a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, or is not one that is authorized by a Parliamentary Act to confer the degree. Additionally, no fictional university or unrecognized institution may use the word “university” in accordance with Section 23 of the UGC Act.

The list also includes universities from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

  • Andhra Pradesh: Christ New Testament Deemed University, Bible Open University of India
  • Delhi: All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Science (AIIPHS), State Government University, Commercial University Ltd., United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR-Centric University, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment, Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University)
  • Karnataka: Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society
  • Kerala: St. John’s University
  • Maharashtra: Raja Arabic University
  • Puducherry: Sree Bodhi Academy of Higher Education
  • Uttar Pradesh: Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University), Bharatiya Shiksha Parishad
  • West Bengal: Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research

Which universities in India are involved in selling fake degrees

You can track your spending more easily if you update the apps on your phone to the destination’s currency. That way, it will be easier for you to check how much money you have left so that there are no surprises when it comes time to pay.

Hundreds of alumni of a private university in India accused of issuing fake degrees have been left in a state of limbo, as their employers in Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, South Africa, the United States, and Canada pressure them into proving that their qualifications are real.

Manav Bharti University (MBU) in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh has allegedly sold as many as 36,000 degrees since it was founded in 2009, for prices ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 rupees (US$1,362-4,085), an Indian government agency investigation found last month. Of the 41,000 degrees issued by the university in that time, only 5,000 were found to be genuine.

Why are there so many people in India with fake degrees and certifications?

In India, people spend money on fake degrees and certificates since they do not want to go through the vigorous curriculum or learn. Earning a genuine degree takes time and requires so much dedication and vigor. Even with fake degrees, they seek respect in society.

Why do the scammers hate me?

The scammers find instant success but the real ones take a long time. It is the scammers who do not like the real ones. No wonder so many fraudsters hate me and I give a damn! They are simply expressing their frustration as I expose them.

Many of them claimed to have master’s degrees without undergrad. Others claim to have undergrad degrees without passing grade ten. They might show some fake proof to make you believe in their lies. That worked well in the Middle East decades back. After they got married, they fooled their housewives and mothers-in-law for quite some time but not long. Then, they limited their lives within small boundaries. All of them create huge bubbles all these years.

When their children understand their parents’ treachery, they cannot take it anymore. For real success, they have to have integrity and stop lying. These liars create lies upon lies periodically to fool everyone. Liars waste their energy and lives only to create more lies. Finally, these fraudsters waste their lives as living liars. No wonder, they cannot reach anywhere, other than going back to their villages to fool the ignorant people.
